May 1: Monet's Garden - Giverny

Today was May Day, which meant a sweet, sweet day off of work. May Day actually originated in the USA in 1886 when American Labor Unions went on strike to limit work days to 8 hours (judging by today's american workplace, these efforts were clearly unsuccessful). But now USA celebrates this day in September (Labor Day)...why? But any day devoted to national strikes and union protests is certainly up France's alley and results in a day off nonetheless.

With this freedom, Jennie and I along with 3 other friends went NW of Paris to see Monet's Gardens in Giverny. We have been looking forward to spring to see the garden's with the flowers in bloom and were not disapointed. I also find it quite exciting when you find yourself exploring the very area where history was made, one brush stroke at a time.

We took a train up to Vernon, rented some bikes for the day, then rode the ~4km bike path to Monet's house and garden.

Jennie crossing the River Seine - Vernon in the background. Of note, we went into that church later in the day and stumbled upon a women singing Ava Maria (in preparation for a wedding the next day). It was beautiful to sit and listen to her - it is always exciting when you stumble upon these little gems or surprises throughout your day that just cannot be planned.

Monet's house.

Andrew and I sitting outside Monet's house waiting for the ladies to get back from touring it. Neither on of us had any desire to go in and see an old house. We were more interested in sitting in the garden and getting our bronze on.

Monet's Japanese Garden. These gardens are where Monet's Japanese Bridge and water lily paintings were inspired.

The garden's adjacent to the house. The house is in the background.

After the garden we continued to bike around Vernon and Vernonette and just enjoyed these quaint little villages and the nice weather. We finished by having a little picnic (is it still called a picnic if you are only drinking wine without food?) along the river Seine.

Bonne Journee!

Great you had the camera for Monet's gardens. Great shots. I also like how you did the select coloring when you took the picture of Jennie's bike. Looking forward to touring the gardens someday with you.
Love, mom

It's so interesting to see how the gardens have changed since we were there. Next time we come it will be in summer and we can see Monet's garden in all it's splendor!

Excellent photographs, it is easy to see how some of those scenes might have inspired and elevated Monet's painting. Only in Paris.
